Science for Sailing: The Search for Corrosion

x

In any industry where water meets steel, corrosion is an underestimated threat - and a very expensive one too: corrosion costs for the European region alone amount to €500bn (DNV-GL report). Moreover, there is no general approach followed in the industry to assess the risk of corrosion and prevent it from happening. Such a methodology, supported by thorough corrosion monitoring and proper management, might lead to cost reductions of 15-30%.

To tackle this problem, Antwerp Maritime Academy has developed a maritime corrosion lab, consisting of mobile platforms positioned in the ports of Ostend and Vlissingen, equipped with sensors to monitor the environment and measure standard corrosion rates. Together with our partners, we want to use this platform to aid the (maritime) industry in working on specific corrosion problems.

On this third Science for Sailing symposium, we will:

  • present the possibilities of the maritime corrosion lab and its equipment
  • discuss future needs with industrial partners and asset-owners, and list possible developments needed by the industry
  • discuss corrosion management (please fill out the questionnaire at https://www.socorro.eu/project-2

We meet each other on 18 November 2022 in the afternoon at Antwerp Maritime Academy - Noordkasteel Oost 6 - 2030 Antwerp, Belgium.

Participation is free, but registration (below) is mandatory.

All organisational aspects depend upon possible Covid restrictions at that moment.

  • We welcome you from 13 h 00 onwards for on site registration and coffee.
  • 13.30 - 13:35: Welcome by our General Manager
  • 13.35 - 14.00: The need for corrosion research - Geert Potters
  • 14.00 - 14.20: Measuring corrosion - Jeroen Tacq
  • 14.20 - 14.40: The maritime corrosion lab - Wikke Witteveen and Raf Meskens
